SIBO friendly hot Bulletproof® coffee recipes!

Recently, a few iced coffee Bulletproof® coffee recipes have appeared on the Bulletproof® forums. Who does not love iced coffee?

We can modify the popular iced Bulletproof® coffee to help combat some of the main causes of SIBO, biofilm production, and opportunistic bacteria! Also, the iced coffee recipe can then be modified to help repair the gut lining as well.

So how does one achieve this?

Well, you first add a high-quality whey protein that uses Proserum whey like Bulletproof® Upgraded™ whey to the recipe. Proserum whey has a high concentration of lactoferrin that we can use as a biofilm chelator. Biofilm is a “protective shield” that opportunistic gut bacteria hide behind. Biofilm protects bacteria from antibiotic treatments, bactericides, supplements, and probiotics. Lactoferrin’s mechanism of action for treating biofilm involves chelation of the iron out of the biofilm cell walls, causing the biofilm to break apart. 1 Breaking up the biofilm weakens the opportunistic bacteria defenses so that the immune system can eliminate the opportunistic bacteria.

To further modify the recipe, you then add a little peppermint oil to the iced coffee. Peppermint oil reduces spasms in the intestinal tract and can also help regulate bowel movements. 2 It also has some antimicrobial properties that can help eliminate opportunistic bacteria in the small intestine and colon. 3 The peppermint in this recipe makes the iced coffee taste like Christmas! This oil can also relax the LES in some people and cause heartburn, so if you suffer from GERD, try another antimicrobial alternative. 4 If the peppermint oil dose causes heartburn when you use it in your iced coffee, you can instead use a combination of ginger oil, 5 and cinnamon, 6 in the iced coffee as a cocktail of antimicrobial agents. Do not use the ginger juice in the gingerbread iced coffee recipe if you are having gallbladder issues or are missing your gallbladder. Ginger stimulates bile release into the small intestine and can be irritating in people with these conditions.7

So technically after using any of the above coffee recipes for about 2-4 weeks, you might want to use the following iced coffee recipe to help repair your gut lining. You would use the L-glutamine in this recipe combined with powdered probiotics and powdered N-acetyl glucosamine (NAG) to help improve the integrity of your gut lining.

L-glutamine is an amino acid that is used in the body for protein synthesis, regulation of acid-base balance in the kidneys, cellular energy, and nitrogen donation. Glutamine is also a nontoxic transporter of ammonia in blood circulation. 8 One of the main consumers of L-glutamine in the body is the intestinal cells, 9 which use it for cellular repair. This is why it is important to supplement with glutamine to increase your gut-repair response in the body naturally. 10 L-glutamine helps maintain the integrity of the gut mucosal barrier and has also been shown to help reduce hospital recovery time after a surgery. This reduction in post surgical hospitalization might be made possible because the extra glutamine supplementation improves white blood cell activity at the surgical site. 11

N-acetyl glucosamine (NAG) is a monosaccharide derivative of glucose. It is involved in the repairing of mucous membranes throughout the body. Patients with IBD disorders have been shown to incorrectly synthesize and utilize NAG in the gastrointestinal system. NAG can help repair the extracellular tissue and mucus barrier of the gastrointestinal system. 12
